For the Love of Peridot

This month we can't help but stare at the gorgeous August birthstone and ideal summer stone, PERIDOT!   Peridot is a very old gemstone that was first mined by Ancient Egyptians on the island in the Red Sea called Topazios (today known as St. John or Zabargard), during the 2nd Millennium B.C.. Peridots are one of the only gemstones that come in exactly ONE distinct color. Egyptians called this beautiful yellow-green stone "the gem of the sun," believing that when set in gold, peridot would protect its owner from nightmares.   Peridot is often confused with topaz and emerald. Legend has it that Cleopatra's favorite gem was peridot, and that most of her so-called collection of emeralds were actually peridot! Peridot is typically found in volcanic rock, but has also been discovered in pallasite meteorites. Today, Peridot is treasured in Hawaii as the goddess Pele's tears, though most peridot sold in Hawaii is mined in the US on the San Carlos Reservation in Arizona.   Our favorite peridot pieces from the Trumpet & Horn collection are a gorgeous pair of antique style peridot earrings and the beautiful Strasburg peridot and diamond ring, shown above! We love this stone dearly and hope to add more to our collection soon!   Images from Taringa! & Island Meetings & Incentives, Inc.
