June is a special month as far as birthstones go because June has not just one, but three!   PEARLS Pearls are super unique as they are the only gems produced within a living sea animal, called mollusks! Pearls require no faceting or polishing to reveal their natural beauty, and have long been an object of beauty, symbolizing success, happiness and love. Historically, pearls have been a favorited for centuries. Pearl hunting began long before the Christian Era, and was one of the most common way of harvesting pearls. The 1500s were considered the ‘Pearl Era'; at the time, pearls were most desirable in Tudor England. Since the early 20th century, the cultured pearl industry has flourished with the help of famous fashion designer Coco Chanel. MOONSTONES Surrounded by a good deal of mystique and magic, moonstones have been present in jewelry for centuries, including ancient civilizations! Moonstones were named by the Roman historian Pliny, who believed that moonstone’s shimmering appearance changed with the phases of the moon. In India, moonstones were regarded as holy, while in Arabic countries, moonstones are a symbol of fertility. Moonstones can be found in a variety of colors, including blue, grey, white, pink, green and brown. In 1970, Florida recognized moonstone as their official state gem.   ALEXANDRITES Alexandrites are extremely rare and unique stones! Alexandrite was first discovered in Russia in 1831, during the reign of Czar Alexander II. Alexandrites are known for their color-changing ability, exhibiting emerald green, red and orange-yellow color. Alexandrite’s rarity is a result of its chemical makeup, as alexandrite only forms when aluminum, beryllium and chrome combine. The Smithsonian Institute houses the world’s largest known Russian faceted alexandrite: a beauty weighing in at 66 carats!   We think the June birthdays out there are incredibly lucky to have three birthstones instead of one! Although, we're sure that makes it three times as hard to choose the perfect piece of vintage jewelry to represent your birth month!
