Wedding 101: How to Budget for Photos (Without Losing the Plot)

Wedding 101: How to Budget for Photos (Without Losing the Plot)

If there are no photos, did the wedding even happen? In the age of Instagram grids and camera rolls packed with memories, wedding photography feels more essential than ever. But essential doesn't have to mean expensive. Your wedding photographer is a key player on the day—but they shouldn’t be the headliner when it comes to your budget.

What to Expect in 2025

In 2025, the average wedding photographer costs around 10–12% of your total budget, with most packages starting at $3,000 and climbing from there. Once you've locked in your venue and date, the photographer usually comes next—ideally 10 to 12 months before the big day. Seasonality, location, and even your guest list size can all affect the price, so build in a little flexibility here.

Find the Right Fit

Your wedding photos should reflect you—not just look like everyone else’s. Before booking, have a proper chat with any potential photographer (video is fine!) to see if you click. Do you want timeless, posed portraits or more of a candid, behind-the-scenes story? Sharing references—like a Pinterest board  or saved Reels on Insta—is a great way to show the vibe you're after without having to explain every detail. Go into the meeting with some visuals of styles/shots you're into.

Ask What’s Included

Photographers don’t always price things the same way. Some offer extras like engagement sessions, rehearsal dinner coverage, or physical albums—others don’t. Ask exactly what’s included (and don’t forget about tipping!). You might find that one photographer’s “standard” package includes more than another’s premium tier. Want to skip a few bells and whistles? See if they offer à la carte pricing so you can build your own package.

Don’t Forget the Details

You’ll likely need a second shooter for that. Looking for dramatic drone footage or film photography? These are often add-ons. A second photographer can also help capture the little in-between moments—like your partner’s face before you walk down the aisle, or the close-up of your grandmother’s ring (or a vintage one from Trumpet & Horn, if you're lucky).

Do Your Homework (Then Trust the Pros)

Choosing your photographer is a big decision, but once you've done your homework, you can relax. Come prepared, ask the right questions, and find someone whose work you love. Then let them work their magic. You’ll walk away with a wedding gallery that’s full of heart—and zero regrets.
